Magnets are objects that produce magnetic fields, which can attract magnetic materials like iron, nickel, and cobalt. There are two main types of magnets:

Magnetic fields are represented by field lines that emerge from the north pole and re-enter the south pole. The Earth itself acts as a giant bar magnet, with a magnetic field that protects us from harmful solar radiation.

When an electric current flows through a wire, it creates a magnetic field around the wire. The strength of this field depends on the current and can be increased by winding the wire into a coil called a solenoid.

This principle of electromagnetism is used in various applications:

Electromagnetic Induction and Generators

Electromagnetic induction is the process of inducing an electromotive force (emf) in a conductor when it is exposed to a changing magnetic field. This principle is the basis for generators, which convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.

In a generator, a coil of wire rotates within a magnetic field, inducing an alternating current in the coil. The emf induced is proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage, as described by Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction.

Generators are used in power stations to generate electricity for the National Grid. Transformers, which use mutual induction between two coils, are also essential components of the electrical power distribution system, allowing voltages to be stepped up or down as needed.
