Series Circuits

Parallel Circuits

In parallel circuits, components are connected across the same voltage source. The total resistance is given by:

1/Rtotal = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + ... + 1/Rn

The current divides inversely with resistance, with higher currents flowing through lower resistance branches.

Voltage Dividers

Voltage dividers use a series/parallel combination to provide a fraction of the input voltage. The output voltage is given by:

Internal Resistance and Terminal Voltage

Real voltage sources, like batteries, have an internal resistance r. The terminal voltage V across a load resistance R is reduced by the voltage drop across r:

Example: Calculating Currents and Voltage Drops

Problem: For the circuit shown, find the currents through each resistor and the voltage drops.

Solution:

  1. Calculate total resistance: Rtotal = 6Ω + (3Ω || 4Ω) = 6Ω + 1.8Ω = 7.8Ω
  2. With VS = 12V, use I = VS/Rtotal to find I = 12V / 7.8Ω = 1.54A
  3. For the 6Ω resistor, VR = IR = 1.54A * 6Ω = 9.24V
  4. For the parallel branch, use Ibranch = VS/Rbranch to find I3Ω = 1.2A and I4Ω = 0.92A

Electrical Measurements

Ammeters are connected in series to measure current, while voltmeters connect in parallel to measure potential difference across components. Proper techniques ensure accurate readings without disturbing the circuit.
